Learners need to be motivated and engaged in order to retain and apply the knowledge they gain. So how do we increase engagement and ensure retention of information?
We could use characters to foster emotional connection between the learner and the subject matter; we could immerse the learner in real-life or situational simulations that allow them to gather information within a contextual setting, make choices and learn from their mistakes in a safe, simulated environment by using scenarios; or we could combine both of these and throw in an additional interactive element such as flip cards to really get the learner interacting with the screen.
Here are three examples I’ve put together to demonstrate these design ideas.
Mini scenarios are great for presenting simple content where a single decision is needed to resolve a situation – click on the image below to view an interactive demo template example of a mini-scenario.
Rather than simply describing a workplace challenge, we could have a relatable character present the scenario to the learner – this would help to establish relevance and make the story more interesting (in this example the response choices have audio narration the learner could listen to before making their selection) – click on the image below to view an interactive demo template example of combining a scenario with a presenting character.
And lastly, we could throw in another interactive element such as flip cards to really get the learner thinking and interacting with the screen!
