10 Things You Should Know About Articulate Storyline

The Challenge

This project was inspired by the e-Learning Heroes weekly challenge #28 – Top 10 Things Learners Need to Know About Storyline.  The challenge was to put together a “top 10 list of getting started tutorials for any area of Storyline development”.

The Process

The challenge overview mentioned that you could use any of Articulate’s tutorials and resources – so I decided to present a curated list of links with an introduction as a way to demonstrate that it can be very effective to include “job aids” in a course.  Job aids can be any resources that send learners outside the course to access more information – and leveraging off Articulates extensive knowledgebase of tutorials just made sense for this design.

In selecting the 10 items for this demo, I discovered a few things you can do with Storyline that I am keen to try out, and others that reinforced what I already know in a more theoretical sense, so the process took much longer to work through as I got a little sidetracked with all the amazing things you can do with Articulate Storyline.

The Design

With a bit more time than usual to work on this design, the design I ended up with is nothing like what I started out with!  On looking through my image gallery, I came across some images that gave me inspiration, but I wasn’t completely happy with the result – then I settled on this desktop theme and it simply evolved.

For the navigation, I wanted to avoid using the Next and Previous buttons, so I chose to start with a simple screen that allows learners to click anywhere to get started – I’m still deciding if I like this or not, but I’m going with it for now!

Originally I didn’t have the colourful page tabs, but once I added them to the design there was no choice but to make them interactive.  I chose not to label them as I felt this would make the interface too complicated.  Alternative navigation via the page menu gives the learner a choice of how they want to navigate the course.  Simple icon buttons to navigate to Home (the menu page) and access information on navigation and the background to the curation of the 10 topics were the finishing touches that the learner is able to access from any screen.

The Result

Elements of the design I think are effective include the animations from the dark overlay to the blurred desktop, then to the final desktop image.  The lightboxing of the YouTube videos was also a deliberate design choice that meant the learner was not navigating away from the slide they were on as I find this very off-putting to lose where you are in a course because of navigation that takes you all over the place.
